WELCOME TO ALASKA365!

Originally from Switzerland, the call of the North first lured me into its clutches in the late 1980s when I traveled to the High Canadian Arctic. Throughout the years that followed, the North became my teacher and I became its student. The natural world of the Arctic and sub-Arctic nurtured my art, intellect and spirit, with Nature as master teacher. My identity as a photographer eventually emerged from these beginnings. From this began a cascade of important discoveries about photography and, ultimately, about myself.

I have built a reputation for creating compelling multimedia productions and images of Alaska and polar regions, with a passionate eye for the land and the people who call it home. With a background in photojournalism, my experience spans location and site work, portraits and landscapes, commercial documentation and aerial photography. I am used to photograph under extreme conditions, such as documenting the 1000-mile Yukon Quest International Dog Sled Race in minus 50 degree weather. As a contract photographer for the Associated Press, I have provided photos for the Washington Post, the L.A. Times, CNN.com, MSNBC, and dozens of smaller newspapers.

My work experience as a wilderness and mountain guide spans the entire state, from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to Prince William Sound to Mount McKinley. Many of my stock photos are captured on these adventures. I am the author of three - and co-author of two photo books. As a public speaker, I have spoken at corporate events and my multimedia productions have been seen by thousands of visitors to Alaska. I am based in Juneau, where I live with my partner Greta and our 6-year old son Florian

WHY ALASKA365?

Alaska365 wants to inspire you and transport you, daily, even just for a fleeting moment, through space and time to Alaska... a visually stunning place, at once precious and harsh, vast and vibrant with life. Alaska truly stretches our capacity to comprehend the meaning of wilderness. Alaska365 is a daily reflection of my ongoing exploration of Alaska. It will take you through the seasons: the explosion of life in spring, the endless flood of light illuminating our summer nights, the vibrant tapestry of color in fall, and the silent flickering of the Northern Lights on cold winter nights.

Join me on my journeys off the beaten path, across vast tundra and taiga, up jagged mountains and down braided rivers, along windswept coastlines and into remote fishing and hunting camps and villages. Through daily images, I want to convey the seasonal rhythms, the eternal ebb and flow of tides and life, and the heartbeat of the land and people who call it home.

It is my hope that you will always enjoy and find relaxation and inspiration from the unique photography and my observations about life in contemporary Alaska. Northern Lights Over Southeast Alaska

The Northern Lights put on a great show over much of Alaska over the past couple of nights, and even in Southeast Alaska we a got a piece of it. This shot is looking across Mendenhall Lake.
